The communties of West Springs and Cougar Ridge are part of Ward 6 in Calgary's southwest, and the WSCR Community Association oversees the following communities: West Springs, Cougar Ridge, Springside, Wentworth and West Springs Ranch.
The history of these communities comes largely from the Paskapoo Slopes in this area, which has significant ecological and historical resources.
A base line archaeological inventory and assessment was carried out in May and June 1997 of Precontact Native Archaeological Sites in the East Paskapoo Slopes and adjacent areas. In total, there are now 49 significant sites identified, including a number of campsites, kill sites, sweat pits and others. Bison were not only driven into corrals along the uppermost slopes below the escarpment; they were also driven and trapped at lower levels along the slopes. [WSCR Community Association]
Right now, the City of Calgary is reviewing a proposed development for the East Paskapoo Slopes, which would have the land rezoned to accommodate. Area Structure Plans are in place right now to set what type of development should be allowed and where. It can also guide on where buildings should be placed and to what design principles they must follow. Two information sessions were held for the public in June, so more news will be coming out about this in the months to come.
While the undeveloped land just east of Canada Olympic Park has been open for the public to enjoy for many years, much of it is privately owned. The property owner has expressed an interest in developing the site and is now trying to get The City’s approval. [City of Calgary]
