Highlights of the Flood Mitigation Project

The Alberta Government announced today that they are committing $600 million over the next three years to fund flood mitigation projects. Here's a look at the flood mitigation project highlights:

  • Storage site near Springbank Road, which will divert and store water from the Elbow River during flood conditions.
  • At McLean Creek and the Elbow River, a dry dam will be placed to provide flood mitigation for Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows and Calgary.
  • A southern route for High River will direct flood water around High River and provide water storage options that can be used for irrigation.
  • Underground diversion for Elbow River into the Bow River is in the study stage (report to be given to City of Calgary by end of June).

These projects will take years to complete, and the next steps will be for infrastructure projects to finish preliminary designs, environmental reviews and consultation.

The Government has also provided $200 million for erosion control projects in our flood-prone communities as well. To get more information on the flood mitigation projects, check out the Government of Alberta website
