This week is Fire Prevention Week in Canada, and kitchen fires are the number one cause of home fires. Here's some tips on home fire safety and prevention:

  • Stay in the kitchen the entire time you're cooking, don't leave things unattended
  • Turn pots inwards on stoves to minimize the risk of bumping them off
  • Keep children and pets away from the stove
  • Keep flammable items away from your stovetop
  • Keep an oven mitt and lid closeby when you cook so you can smother the flames if a small fire starts
  • When cooking, keep a pot lid and oven mitt nearby so if a small fire starts you can smother it quickly
  • Setting a cooking timer can help ensure cooking is not left for long periods of time

“With busy lives, we often multitask to get everything done, including when making meals. This can lead to leaving cooking unattended with sometimes disastrous results,” said Calgary Fire Department Public Information Officer Carol Henke. “We want to share important fire safety tips that Calgarians can use in their home not just this week, but throughout the year.”
