Calgary is the Cleanest City in...the World!

Well, big news today for our city as it was announced that Calgary is not only the cleanest city in the country, but also the world. While Calgary has always ranked in the top three of Mercer Global Financial and HR Consulting's list of cleanest cities, this is the first time we have snagged the top spot.

The study was based on five factors: water availability and drinkability, waste removal, quality of sewage systems, air pollution and traffic congestion.

Here are some of the highlighted reasons Calgary is the cleanest city around:

• City of Calgary commitment to divert 80% of waste away from landfills by 2020
• Nenshi seeking government funding for multi-million dollar composting facility
• Fines up to $1,000 for littering in Calgary
• Our Blue Cart program for recycling at home
• The Green Calgary Association - promoting green living and eco-friendly lifestyles

The top five cleanest cities on the list were (from 5 to 1):

• Kobe, Japan
• Minneapolis, USA
• Honolulu, Hawaii
• Adelaide, Australia
• Calgary, Canada
