Summer is near and that means time for many of us to get out of town for a much-needed vacation. Don't let the stress of keeping your home safe and secure while you're gone, deter you from leaving town. Here are 10 easy tips on protecting your home while you're away on vacation:

Consider hiring a home/pet-sitter. Obvious benefits here, but you'll have the peace of mind of knowing your home is safe and your animals are taken care of.

Hold your mail. Contact your Post Office to have your mail stopped while you are away. It also won't have mail piling up and signaling thieves you're not home.

Stop your newspaper delivery. If mail piling up isn't a bad enough sign you're gone, a pile of newspapers is even worse.

Keep eyes on your property. Have neighbours or friends keep a casual watch on your place.

Make your home appear lived in. Invest in some timers that will turn lights on and off a couple times each day.

Keep the landscape up to par. If you're going to be away for a long time, hire a landscaper to come by once a week and tend to the grass, etc.

Lock everything. It may seem like common sense, but double-check to make sur everything is locked away.

Careful where you broadcast your vacation. The Internet is a great place to share with friends, but be careful where you announce to others you'll be gone for an extended period of time.

Turn off your garage door. This eliminates one big way of access to your home.

Install extra security. Besides the fact this always gives you added peace of mind, if you're someone who travels a lot, this is an obvious way to keep your home and belongings secure and safe.
